What is ‘Built not bought’ Install competition?

‘Built not bought’ is a competition created to help encourage beginners and enthusiasts to self-build an install or show off a build that you have already completed

How it Works

Build an install for your car, Bring it to Modified Nationals 2012 , Get Judged, Drive home with the Money.

Categories:   There are no categories …… when being judged you will be asked What you were trying to create i.e. Bass Monster, A Car park/Cruise Blaster, A Full-on Show Car look, A “Sound Quality” Build, A Multimedia Explosion Showcar etc etc. and you will be judged on how well we feel your goal has been achieved.

You will also be judged on

Design & Layout:

When judging. Does the system have proper power distribution and fusing? Does the system exhibit good ease of use, are all the components easily accessible, etc?

Install Quality:

Is the system going to fall apart? Are there wires loose or hanging about? Does the system have dangling wires or exposed copper? Is there attention to detail? Does the system interfere with the normal use of the vehicle? These are some of the things you should look for when scoring on installation quality.

All components of the system should be properly fixed there should not be any risk to travel in the car.

Install Creativity:

Does the install exhibit unique creativity such as custom fiberglassing, speaker pods, door panels, and custom sub box design?

Questions

Will I be judged on the Quality or make of Equipment?

No, the make of the equipment used is entirely up to your brand preference and budget.

Will I get more points for having more Subs Amps, Multimedia etc?

No You will be judged on what you are trying to achive if you are trying to build a Bass monster then you would not loose points for not having screens all over the boot, if you be clever with the multimedia then you would  not be judged for not having a dozen 12” Subs

Can I have any professional help?

Yes if you are not confident about wiring your build you will not lose points for having wiring checked or fitted by an auto electrician ,you will also not loose points for having your install painted by a body shop but will get bonus points if you have been able to paint it yourself.

How would you verify that work has been completed by an individual as opposed to a paid build, will there be requirements to validate this?
I fear entrants may fabricate false claims to their work, I for one would wish to enter my vehicle but suspect that there maybe some abuse to the authenticity of peoples claims.

  2. Modified Nationals

Hi… Please see the line below. “Receipts, build photos and information on how your build was created will be required to authenticate your work.” We would hope that people would not enter and make false claims. We know a lot of people in the industry and the competition will be judged by an industry specialist, any false claims would soon be found out. The world is smaller than you think. We look forward to receiving your entry in due course.

Hi..The short answer is YES. As long as you are not a business or do builds for your day job. If you get paid for doing it then NO. You would need to produce the photos, receipts and keep us updated as per the competition requires. When you enter please make clear whose car it is and if its a friend/family member. Any more questions please email admin@modifiednationals.co.uk

hi i will be entering, Quick quetion i will be on a club stand. So are the cars going to be in aseperate area together for the full show? or are you calling everyone up one by one or walking around and judgeing where the cars are??

    Thanks

  8. Modified Nationals

Hi Tom, The cars will be judged where they stand, if cars want to be on a club stand thats ok. We just need to know nearer the show what stand each car will be on.

  9. Aaron

    Hello,

Does ‘Built not Bought’ have a stand for cars that are not part of a car club?

    Cheers

    Aaron

  10. Modified Nationals

Any cars not wishing their cars to be on a club stand (or other) will be offered a space to show their car in the ‘Built not bought’ Show area.

    Hi,

About two years ago my dad and I built a superb speaker / sub box which we were looking at entering in. We didn’t take any pictures of the box build in stages, we have a few pictures of us installing the amps and subs and the finished box. Bought a new car, looking at redesigning the box will supply pictures of old box and the stages of redesigning the box and refitting the amp, subs etc. My question is Would this be acceptable evidence? would we be allowed to enter? The box is a complete unit housing 2 subs, 2 6×9′s, 3 amps, 2 crossovers, a capacitor and designed to be removed as one complete unit. So therefore is easily recognized as not being a bought box…

    Thanks for you time

    Looking forward to your reply

    Clint

Hi… If you are doing a complete rebuild anyway (taking it apart and re-assembling) then as you also have some photos from the original build that should be ok. If you buy anything for the new build keep your receipts for that. Take photos as you go for the new install etc to corroborate. Please fill in the competition form and send back to me, you can send in photos as you go plus any information you think necessary. I look forward to receiving your entry. Jacx

i brought my sub amp and subs from a family member cheap how do i get on with no receipt for this?

  14. Modified Nationals

Hi.. Although you need to keep receipts as part of your entry, we don’t need them for everything if you don’t have them. The build receipts would be the most important along with the photographs you take.

  15. Clint

    Hi Jacx,

    Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately we were not looking at taking the the box apart and re-assembling it as it has been glued, screwed and sealed completed, and will fit in my new car as it is. I am kicking myself for not taking any pics while we were building it a couple of years ago though, Didn’t think of it at the time. We were only looking at stripping the vynal and paint off and re-finishing it, then installing the alpine gear back into it. Guessing from your other replies above this would not be sufficient evidence for us to enter?

    Again thanks for your time,

    Clint

  16. Modified Nationals

Hi Clint. I have taken further advice and I am told you would have sufficient evidence to enter. We obviously need as much evidence as an entrant can supply to support their build entry, if you enter and supply as much as you can that would be acceptable. A lot of this competition is taken on trust, it is a small world and if someone entered with something that isn’t what they say i’m sure it would be found out at the show. All entrants will have different amounts of supporting evidence just supply as much as you can. The judges will want to talk to the entrants about the build, so anyone who has less evidence will have the chance to talk about how they put it all together.

    Hi,

Just another quick one, how many, and what days is the built not bought competition held on as I was wondering if I would have to stand with my car the whole time or will I be able to see the rest of the show?

    Many Thanks

    Clint

  19. Modified Nationals

Hi.. The 2 show days are Sat & Sun. Fri is to arrive and set up although we provide evening entertainment on the Frias well as the Sat. You will not have to stay with your car all the time. We ask you to provide a mobile number so that the judges can call if you are not around. Jacx

    Hi There,
I Would Like To Enter a Car our Company Has Just Completed For Clarion Audio, I Have Picture Proof Of The Build, But Not Sure Where I Stand?

  22. Modified Nationals

Hi.. Sorry but the ‘Built not bought’ competition is open to those who have ‘built’ their audio install themselves and not had it done by a professional company. Reading your query I do not think you qualify to enter.

  23. Greeny
